Reading
I’m devouring “Opacities” by Sofia Samatar and continuing to read “Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them” by Dan Saladino. I also started “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by James Baldwin because I needed a short book to read at night while I’m laying in bed waiting for my kid to fall asleep. (Eating to Extinction is hefty.) I’m using my library more (and the Libby app) and started “Revolution at Point Zero” by Silvia Federici and “Blue Plate Special” by Kate Christensen as ebooks. I like to have a book for all settings!
Other reading that’s keeping me busy is the submissions to Rose Books Reader (very fun, so much good writing) and all the zines I picked up last weekend (this deserves its own post which will be next week!)
Writing
I’m writing a final report for the grant that partly funded my zine, a short piece that I’m excited to share more about soon, and I’m working on the newsletter to finish up this year and dream into the future.
Eating
Some days there are three half-eaten bowls of oatmeal in my refrigerator. When that happens, the following day I make pancakes by blending the oatmeal with a banana (often also overly ripe and in the fridge), soy milk or yogurt, cinnamon, salt, and a little oil. Then into the pan the batter goes and while the pancakes aren’t light and fluffy, they are satisfying on many levels. I’m particularly fond of a thin pancake with an almost lacy edge (use oil or butter in a cast iron pan for this result!)
The Good Enough Weekly comes out on Fridays, alternating essays and shorter updates. I also take on freelance editing and writing projects. Reach out if you’re looking for help in those departments — I’ve worked on everything from zines to textbooks. More info here.
