Rather than share a new essay this week, I decided calmly, and with no angst or feelings of failure (kidding — there was angst), to take the day off and share a few recent favorites instead.
The Dysfunction of Food by Kim Foster
Kim shares a recent lecture she gave about “what food means and doesn’t mean for a lot of people.” It’s thoughtful, well-researched, and with the deep humanity always present in Kim’s writing.
Feminism has a motherhood problem by Zawn Villines
It’s worth noting that my eldest child is turning ten — i.e. I’m a decade into this motherhood thing — and I’m only growing more irate about the state of parenting in the US with each passing year. Zawn writes succinctly about a lot of what makes me too angry to be coherent about, one of the many reasons I don’t write much about parenting.
buddha jumps over a wall 佛跳墙 by Hannah Che
I want to make this soup so badly! Hannah’s newsletter is beautiful and has stayed with me.
The Desk Dispatch: In Diaspora, Spice Becomes Seed by Ruby Saha
Discovering new (to me) food writers is why I love the internet, and Ruby’s essay in Alicia Kennedy’s newsletter is a treat.
Mango lassi by Apoorva Sripathi
If you have ripe mangoes in your neck of the woods, this is the post you need.

Style Diaries: Kiara Lee Sayer is in transition by Subrina Heyink
“A conversation with SSENSE’s lead styling director on motherhood, fashion styling as a profession, and rebuilding her wardrobe”
Solidarity by Victoria Meléndez
“On New Year’s Eve, I was walking home from the hardware store when a woman pulled over next to me and asked if I was going to the protest. I didn’t know there was one and told her as much. Then I clocked the Palestinian flag in the front seat of her car and realized she must have noticed the keffiyeh I was wearing for the first time.”
My son loves potato leek soup, so I made it a few days ago. Yesterday, after heating up a bowl of the same soup, I used the bad pot holder to take the soup from the microwave and dropped it on the floor. Sometimes the soup hits the floor. I hope you’re finding ways to take some time to yourself when you need it, too. And join me in wishing Henry a happy birthday!
The Good Enough Weekly comes out every Friday, alternating an essay with Of the Week. I also take on freelance editing and writing projects. Reach out if you’re looking for help in those departments — I’ve worked on everything from zines to textbooks. More info here. And my zine of adapted Irish fairytales, Desert Pookas, is available for preorder now!
Thanks for turning me on to Kim’s newsletter. I’m halfway through The Meth Lunches. Quite a read!
What a sweet picture of you two. Happy Birthday Henry!
